Head of Ocean Predator Lab
Dr David Curnick
David is a Research Fellow at ZSL, Honorary Research Fellow at University College London (UCL) and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Exeter. His research seeks to understand the impact of anthropogenic actions on the behaviour and distribution of ocean predators and assess the implications for ecosystem health and management effectiveness. He conducts innovative and impactful research through a multi-disciplinary approach including the application of telemetry tagging, remote sensing, chemical tracers and fisheries analyses. He is a strong advocate of stakeholder engagement and strives to ensure his research translates into management and policy action.

Postdoctoral Research Assistant
Dr Claire Collins
Claire Collins is a post-doctoral researcher based at ZSL and the University of Exeter, having recently completed her PhD on social dimensions of illegal fisheries in the Indian Ocean. Her research seeks to understand human dimensions of conservation problems, with a key focus on behavioural reactions to management and policy. Claire's research frequently combines understanding from different social science methods, with a focus on informal, participatory approaches to generate understanding. Key current research interests include understanding drivers of spatial footprint of fisheries and using a value-chain approach to understand incentives for trade in endangered species.

Postdoctoral Research Assistant
Dr Rosie Williams
Rosie has a PhD from Brunel University and specialises in ecotoxicology. Her research seeks to understand the impacts of exposure to chemical pollution on marine apex predators. Rosie currently works in collaboration with the UK Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme (CSIP) to assess the health of UK cetacean populations. Rosie assesses the ecotoxicological status of cetaceans to investigate: spatiotemporal trends of pollutant burdens; relationships between burdens and health; and assesses toxicity and risk in relation to other anthropogenic stressors. Rosie hopes that her work will ensure remediation and mitigation policies are adequate to protect UK marine apex predators.

Postdoctoral Research Assistant
Dr Daniel Montgomery
Daniel has a PhD from the University of Exeter and specialises in ecophysiology of fish and sharks. His research seeks to understand how environmental conditions affect physiological performance and the subsequent impacts on populations. He applies a variety of methods including biologging, telemetry, respirometry, and biochemical analysis to investigate impacts of environmental change, sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, and marine conservation. Daniel is currently working in collaboration with Project SIARC researching the movements, habitat use, and reproductive ecology of critically endangered tope sharks in Cardigan Bay, Wales to inform conservation and management approaches.

PhD Student
Ben Williams
Ben is a PhD student at UCL and ZSL, funded by the FSBI. His research focuses on developing machine learning techniques to monitor and support coral reef conservation. His early work centred on developing machine learning methodologies to accelerate analysis and understanding of reefs through soundscape analysis. He has since applied these methods to track functional recovery across a global restoration programme and measure illegal bomb fishing on coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific. During his PhD, Ben has worked with two key industry partners: Mars, who lead the world’s largest coral reef restoration programme (buildingcoral.com), and Google DeepMind's bioacoustics team, Perch.

PhD Student
Dani Crowley
Dani is a PhD student with Bangor University and ZSL funded by CDT SuMMeR. She’s working to further understand the social, cultural, and ecological importance of elasmobranchs to coastal communities across North Wales, and how this will be impacted by climate change. This project is transdisciplinary in nature, combining elements of social science, ecology, zoology, and oceanography, as well as working in collaboration with local communities alongside Project SIARC. Dani is particularly interested in the intersection between scientific and humanities research and in using science communication and education for meaningful and inclusive conservation outcomes.

PhD Student
Lucy Clarke
Lucy is a PhD student based between The Centre for Ecology and Conservation at Exeter University and ZSL. Her PhD is funded though The NERC GW4+ and explores the factors that drive shark distributions at Ascension Island at a range of spatial and temporal scales, to provide insight into the dynamic processes that affect marine predator distributions, as well as informing shark conflict management in one of the world’s largest Marine Protected Areas. More generally, Lucy has an interdisciplinary background and seeks to apply this through her work, combining social science approaches with biotelemetry and spatial ecology to inform evidence-based conservation and management strategies.

MSc Student
Satrio Samudra
Satrio is an MSc student at University College London, funded by Chevening, with a background in coral reef ecology, marine biodiversity, and conservation planning. He works on the effectiveness of marine protected areas (MPAs), coral rubble rehabilitation, and the role of community-based conservation. He has led marine biodiversity expeditions and rubble bed assessments, and co-authored RRAP's Rubble Restoration guideline. His work blends scientific diving, socio-ecological approaches, and spatial analysis to understand reef system recovery. Satrio is currently involved in research on reef soundscapes and predator-prey interactions using AI.

MSc Student
Niamh Tucker
Niamh is a master’s student studying Biodiversity and Global Change at University College London, in collaboration with ZSL and the Natural History Museum. Her key interests include marine biodiversity, human-wildlife interactions, and monitoring anthropogenic impacts on species behaviour. Her interest in ecology and conservation began during her studies in Physical Geography at the University of Exeter. Niamh is seeking to apply this academic foundation to her current research which explores the impact of shark presence on coral reef soundscapes, using Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) footage. Niamh's project is in collaboration with the Save our Seas Foundation.
